Purple eyes, often referred to as violet eyes, are seen in less than 1% of the global population. This striking hue is a result of an extreme scarcity or complete absence of the\u00a0<\/span>pigment<\/span>\u00a0melanin in the iris, which can be linked to genetic mutations or conditions like albinism. Since there is\u00a0<\/span>virtually no<\/span>\u00a0pigment to absorb light, the red color of the blood vessels at the back of the eye mixes with the blue light scattering in the\u00a0<\/span>stroma<\/span>, creating the final, captivating violet appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is It Possible to Have Purple Eyes?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Yes, it is possible for a person to have purple, violet, or lavender eyes, though it is extremely rare. This occurs when the irises (the colored part of the eyes) have a purple or violet hue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Purple irises can result from a genetic mutation that may or may not be related to a condition called albinism. Eye inflammation and some eye diseases can also cause the irises to appear purple. If something causes a person\u2019s eyes to change color, the new color may be permanent.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Rare Are Purple Eyes?<\/span><\/h2>\n

While\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0difficult to pinpoint an exact number, research suggests that less than 1% of the global population have natural purple eyes. This makes purple the rarest eye color.<\/span><\/p>\n

Violet eyes are sometimes found in people with albinism, which affects only one person out of every 20,000. But even people with albinism usually have\u00a0<\/span>blue eyes<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>hazel eyes<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>green eyes<\/span><\/a>, or\u00a0<\/span>brown eyes<\/span><\/a>. This is why it\u2019s believed that less than 1% of people in the world have naturally violet eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Violet eye color can happen naturally through genetics or it may occur as the result of certain eye conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Role of Melanin in Eye Color<\/span><\/h3>\n

Your hair, skin, and eye color come from the melanin in your body. Melanin is a substance produced by cells called melanocytes. While everyone has the same number of melanocytes, the amount of melanin (pigmentation) the cells produce varies from person to person.<\/span><\/p>\n

A person whose cells produce high levels of melanin will often have a deeper skin tone and darker-colored hair and eyes. On the other hand, someone whose cells produce lesser amounts of melanin will have fairer skin and lighter eyes and hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Low Pigmentation and the Iris Layers<\/span><\/h3>\n

The color of your eyes comes from the iris (the colored part of the eye), which has two different layers. The first layer of the iris is where your eye color appears. The second layer of the iris contains brown pigment. This is true for everyone, no matter what color your eye appears to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

In violet or purple eyes, as well as blue and gray eyes, the first layer contains very little pigmentation. What gives them their color is how light reflects off the collagen fibers and other structures in this layer of the iris.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Red and Blue Light Combine to Make Violet<\/span><\/h3>\n

To appear violet or purple, the eye must have extremely low to zero melanin. In these rare cases, the red color of the blood vessels at the back of the iris shines through the nearly colorless stroma. The lack of pigment in the stroma simultaneously causes light entering the eye to scatter blue light outward (known as Rayleigh scattering). When the reflected red light (from blood vessels) combines with the scattered blue light, the observer sees the final resulting hue as violet or light purple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Purple Eyes and Albinism<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Albinism is a group of genetic conditions that affect the production of melanin or pigment in the hair, skin, and eyes. It\u2019s possible for albinism to affect the pigment of one feature but not others.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, you can have oculocutaneous (ock-you-low-cue-tay-nee-us) albinism, which affects melanin production in the hair, skin, and eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also ocular albinism, which only affects the eyes, while hair and skin\u00a0maintain\u00a0normal pigmentation. Ocular albinism is much less common than oculocutaneous albinism and is caused by a mutation in the GPR143 gene. This gene plays\u00a0an important role\u00a0in the\u00a0eyes\u2019\u00a0pigmentation.<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned earlier, when there\u2019s a lack of pigment in the iris, the color presented is a reflection of eye structures. Because there are so many blood vessels in the eye, light reflected from a \u201ccolorless\u201d eye can appear red, pink, or purple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diseases That Can Cause a Violet Eye Color<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

If left untreated, certain eye conditions can cause the eye(s) to change color. Though rare,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> possible for color changes to give the appearance of purple or lavender eyes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
