FAQ

What are Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses — also known as light-adaptive, variable tint, photochromic, and light-responsive lenses — feature lenses that darken when exposed to sunlight and are clear indoors. These color-changing lenses are excellent at protecting your eyes from UV rays and harmful blue light from digital devices — both known for causing eye problems later in life.

Are Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ good for your eyes?

If you're wondering ‘What are Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses glasses good for?’, the answer is simple: They are good for your eyes. They provide the protection you need from different types of light, UV rays and harmful blue light from digital screens. They are also good for children’s eyes — most of the sun damage people acquire in their life happens before the age of 18.

What's the difference between photochromic lenses and Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

Photochromic and Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses are actually the same thing. The best-known manufacturer of photochromic lenses in the US is Transitions Optical, which is the reason photochromic lenses are often referred to as Transitions lenses.

Can you wear Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ at night?

Wearing Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses at night shouldn’t be a problem, even while driving. The lenses are designed to darken only in response to UV light, so headlights won’t have any effect on them.

How much do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ glasses cost?

Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses traditionally add hundreds of dollars to the cost of prescription eyeglasses, but at Eyebuydirect, lenses can cost as little as $100. Combine that with our affordable frames, and you’ve got a great deal! We even carry special frame packages that automatically include Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses for a lower price.

Do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ go completely clear?

Transitions ® Signature Gen S ™ lenses are completely clear indoors, away from UV light. Transitions XTRActive lenses have a slight tint indoors to provide additional light protection.

Transitions lenses provide light protection inside and outside, with new technology that helps them fadeback to clear faster than ever.

Can you get Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ coating on existing glasses?

No, Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses change color due to the molecular composition of the lens itself, so there is no coating that can transform normal glasses into them. You’d have to have the lenses in the frames swapped out to make your glasses into a pair with Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses. We offer some great deals on photochromic lenses that you might as well keep your daily drivers and add a new pair of Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses glasses to your collection.

How long do Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ work for?

Most Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses will last for the average lifespan of a pair of glasses — three years. When the clear lenses develop a yellowish hue at their edges and are less dark in full sunlight, they’re on their way out. Luckily, once your Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses are old enough to show signs of wear, it’s likely time for a new prescription anyway.

Are there different types of Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

There are several different types of Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses. Eyebuydirect offers Transitions Signature Gen S and Transitions XTRActive lenses.

You can get Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses with prescription or non-prescription glasses and they come in several lens color options including gray, brown, amethyst, sapphire, and amber.

How do you know if you have Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™?

You should be able to tell if you have Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses by stepping outdoors and seeing them darken over the course of a couple of minutes. However, testing them behind the windshield of a car won't give you the same result. You must expose them to UV light directly from the sun, as Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses even work on overcast days. If your lenses show no sign of darkening after exposure to sunlight, you’ll know that you don’t have Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses.

Can Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ replace sunglasses?

While sunglasses with Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses are wonderful for protecting eyes from UV light in the absence of sunglasses, they are not considered a replacement for sunglasses. Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses are perfect for running errands where you move in and out of the sun throughout the day and are a tremendous improvement over mere prescription glasses. However, for prolonged outdoor activities in very bright conditions — especially high glare where light is reflecting off of water or snow — polarized sunglasses are your best bet for eye protection.

Can you get Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ with progressive lenses?

You can get Transitions® lenses with a progressive prescription at Eyebuydirect. Transitions Light Intelligent Lenses seamlessly change from clear to dark depending on the surrounding brightness, and progressive prescriptions provide complete near and distance vision correction. This combination of lens options is perfect for protecting your eyes from UV light while meeting your multifocal needs.

How can you make Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ change faster?

There’s no trick to make Transitions® lenses change more quickly from light to dark and vice versa. Your lenses will darken faster in brighter environments, but they will always take a few minutes to change back to clear once they are no longer exposed to bright light.

Do you need a prescription for Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ glasses?

You don’t need a prescription for Transitions® glasses, you can add them to clear lenses if you don’t need vision correction. This means you can wear your stylish frames both indoors and out.

Can you damage your eyes wearing non-prescription glasses?

Non-prescription glasses won’t cause any damage to your eyes; they shouldn’t affect your vision in any way. Eyeglass frames can cause discomfort if they are too tight, so make sure the temples and nose pads aren’t gripping your face too tightly if you’re getting headaches or sore spots while wearing non-prescription glasses.
