Famous Eyeglasses Part 2

Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa

Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa

Ashikaga Yoshimasa, born Ashikaga Yoshinari, was the 8th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate is considered to be the original owner of the oldest known eyeglasses existing today, and a beautifully delicate, decorative hand carved white ivory eyeglasses.

Yoshimasa was almost 30 year old, when he decided that he needs an heir to the throne. Lacking children of his own, he adopted his brother’s son as heir. Not long after doing so, however, Yoshimasa was blessed with a child of his own.

The question was- Who of the two sons will be heir to the shogunate?

This turn of events was rather unfortunate for Japan- The brother’s dispute of the heir of the Ashikaga shogunate turned within a couple of year to armed war- The Ōnin War. This war is usually considered the first  in a series of clashes that lasted about 100 years and is considered as one of the most unstable in Japanese History.
